A simple food diary template

A useful meal note says what you had in words you will understand later. You can copy this template into a notebook, a notes app, or the Meali composer. Leave out any field you don’t need.

[Meal or time]: [foods and drinks], [rough amount], [preparation or extras]. [Anything I’m unsure about].

For example: “Lunch: one bowl of lentil soup, one slice of bread with butter, and water. Homemade soup; not sure of the recipe.” A short description is enough to begin. Add measurements only when you know them and want to record them.

Example meal notes for everyday situations

These are fictional examples of how to write an entry, not a meal plan or recommended portions.

A quick breakfast

Two slices of toast with peanut butter, one banana, and a mug of coffee with a splash of milk.

This records the drink and spread alongside the main food. If you know the bread or milk type, you can add it.

A home-cooked meal

A medium bowl of pasta with tomato sauce and grated parmesan. The sauce had olive oil. About one quarter of the pot.

When you share a recipe, the fraction you ate can be a useful detail. You do not need to invent an exact cooked weight.

A restaurant meal

Chicken shawarma in a pita with salad and tahini. Ate the whole pita and shared a side of fries, roughly half.

Describe the part you ate, including a shared side. Restaurant recipes and serving sizes can vary, so an estimate should remain an estimate.

A snack or drink

A small handful of almonds and a large oat-milk latte. Not sure whether the oat milk was sweetened.

It is fine to record uncertainty directly. A missing brand or ingredient does not make the rest of the note useless.

What if you don’t know the portion?

Start with an ordinary description: a small bowl, two pieces, a shared plate, or most of a sandwich. If you later learn more, update the entry. A photo can help you remember what was visible, but it cannot establish every ingredient or the exact amount.

In Meali, you can correct quantities, edit nutrition values, or describe what should change. Learn how to review a nutrition estimate before treating a number as settled.

Review the note before the numbers

Check that the entry describes your meal: the foods, the portion you actually ate, and any extras you meant to include. That is useful even if you never use a calorie goal.

If you eat something often, Meali lets you save a meal and log it again. Check the new portion and any changes instead of assuming every repeat was identical. If you are starting from scratch, the beginner’s food journaling guide can help you choose a routine.
